Large capacity
Two optical fibers could transmit over two million simultaneous telephone conversations using modern technology. The fiber optical cable usually contains up to 200 optical fibers which increases capacity one hundred times. Comparing to large multi pair cable (500 conversations), coaxial cable (10000 conversations) and a microwave radio or satellite link (2000 conversations) fiber optics is having significant advantage in capacity.
Size and weight
Fiber optics cable has reduced diameter and weight compared to copper wire of the same capacity which makes it easier to inst
all and takes less space.
Electrical Interference
The optical fiber is not generating any EI and cannot be affected by any (EMI, RFI) even by the hostile one. Also signal in one fiber cannot cross talk to other fiber in any situation.
Insulation
Optical fiber is an insulator which require no electrical signal and is capable of isolating it.
Security
High level of security with a loss of light rays close to zero. Any data loss can be easily tracked by monitoring the power of the received ray.
Reliability and maintenance
Optical fiber can serve up to 30 years being immune to moisture, temperature changes and is suitable for underwater use. Optical cable doesn’t contain any copper that can corrode and is not affected by short circuits, power surges or static electricity.
Versatility
Fiber optics can be used for most data, voice and video communications standards.
Expansion
While having exactly same cable the system with low data rate can be easily upgraded to a higher data rate system by changing the equipment.
