Next-gen cellular mobile communications systems like LTE (Long Term Evolution) and 4G (fourth generation) system have been developed to provide densely populated areas with high per-user bandwidths. These systems are incorporated with the high speed optical networks in the CoMP (Cooperative MultiPoint) technique. This technique allows wireless system rely on the optical network like PON. PON would meet all the requirements to support this kind of systems backbone
Figure 1. The FUTON system for support of CoMP in 4G cellular mobile communications.
In order to test the CoMP, European project called FUTON was created. As Figure 1 shows the DBWS (Distributed Broadband Wireless System) is located inside central unit, together with processing and coordination units, CoMP can not only support 4G cellular mobile, but also WiMAX, 3G, and Wi-Fi.
FUTON system shows how close are the high-speed optical system and wireless system integrated together, and suggest that these systems should be considered as one communication system.
