FTTH providers are exploiting an already existing networks with new service offerings. Triple play services are being offered by cable operators, because they want a share from future revenue. Due to the fact that only first mile copper is shared, cable operator requires a parallel infrastructure in order to offer telephony and data, for the customers that want a triple play package. At the same time, traditional telephone operators are discussing converged infrastructures and some of them even deploy those. This kind of network will be able to save money on operational expenses and capital expenditure, since it is a single network, rather than multiple parallel networks.
Due the high demand of various TV and video services, especially very fast developing HDTV (high-definition TV), users have higher acceptance of extra payment for quality and quantity. This makes operators have big incentive in offering of higher speed services in anticipation of fuure revenues.
Here are the examples of amount of bandwidth for different services:
- IPTV 5-10 Mb/s
- MPEG2 coded HDTV 20 Mb/s
- MPEG4 coded HDTV 22-30 Mb/s
- Triple play package minimum 40-60 Mb/s
Value for triple play package is calculated from approximation of an average household with at least two or three parallel TV channels apart from IP telephony and Internet connection.
As indicated in previous research articles, large building companies are commonly installing fibre in their building projects. Since the cost of installation is very low and value of apartment increases with installation, expenses are covered very fast. Some of the estate companies even use broadband connection for rationalising and optimising of the operations in their buildings. In some cases, when the business case is agreed, estate companies get additional revenue from the network operator, since operator is responsible for network maintenance.
